Sikhism101.com FAQ - Spirituality - Abhiyaas & Bhagti

Can a non-amritdhari experience the 'paaras-kalaa' (philosopher's stone touch) of Naam simran?

Normally 'no', but there are exceptions. People who have massive bhagti (accumulation of the profit of doing the devotional worship of Waheguru) from previous lives, sometimes get spiritual experiences by japping Naam (reciting the Divine-Name) or getting exposes to Naam vibrations before Amrit. But such Grace is short-lived and one can never get full potential of Gurmat Naam (the Divine Name as per the Guru's instruction) without japping Naam through the Guru i.e. after receiving Amrit.

Can a non-Amritdhari experience the paaras-kalaa (philosopher's stone touch) of Gurbani?

Yes! One can experience the paaras-kalaa of Gurbani provided one exposes one's heart to Gurbani. Gurbani is Sarab Sanjhi i.e. anyone Sikh or non Sikh can come and experience the cool shadow of the tree of Gurbani.

Is there a difference between the paaras-kalaa (philosopher's stone touch) of Gurbani and Naam?

Naam (the Divine-Name) and Gurbani are closely knitted together (เจ“เจค เจชเฉ‹เจค). Both are made of the same spiritual material. The underlying material in both is same. Since Naam has come out of mouth of Satguru, so Naam too is baani but the difference lies in the fact that whole of Gurbani gives us hukam to japp one specific Naam. This specific Naam is Gurmat Naam that we get at the time of our initiation at the lotus hands of Panj Pyaare.

What happen's if we don't have Naam from the True Guru?

Guru Sahib gives us many quotes from Guru Granth Sahib Jee on how our lives would be without the name of the Lord.

What is 'Bismaadh' state?

When Naam Ras is at its extreme in the body fortress of a Gurmukh, the body goes into a state of Bismaadh. This is when the body 'shuts down' and we experience just pure Naam Ras. We can see this state in RehNsvaaees - some Gurmukhs go into this state. We used the example of Bhai Rama Singh Ji and Bhai Jeevan Singh Ji, in RehNsbaaees (all-night keertan) it used to look as though they were asleep because their heads were pointed down and their body forward as they are asleep in the Keertan; however they used to stay fully-aware in the Keertan.

What is the spiritual significance of Amrit-Velaa (early ambrosial hours)?

It is at Amritvelaa that the Khalsa drinks Amrit Ras.

It is usually at this time that we get to meditate on Waheguru without any disturbances. Some people get up at 1am, some at 3am, some at 5am, it all shows how much devotion you have for the Guru. The earlier you wake up the more sleep you sacrifice for your Guru.

What is the difference between a 'Naam-Abhiyaasee' and a 'Naam-Rasseeyaa'?

How can one concentrate on Naam for long periods of time?

A common 'problem' that some Gursikhs talk about is having headaches when they do Simran or when they stop. This is completely normal! It is in fact your Dhiaan (Concentration) growing and shows that you are doing Abhiyaas (Repetition) correctly. However, on the other hand you can get headaches if you are trying too hard. Some people do Abhiyaas for an experience, some Japp Guroo Guroo very fast. Take it nice and easy, one step at a time. Take your time whilst doing Abhiyaas and you will surely feel the Naam Rass (Sweet Nectar of Naam).

What is the True Home?

Has anyone ever wondered what home actually is? GurbaaNee talks about it alot. To Duniyaavee (worldly) people home means physical. To Spiritualists home is our body.

The Chinese believe that we are the universe, and this is what Sikhee believes also - In our soul we have access to all matter in the universe. Indeed, all matter is Naam itself, everything vibrates with one vibration (Naam). In your spiritual journey you will reach a stage when all you see is Naam, all you see is Naam! how Amazing! This is a the Joth (spiritual light) of God, what all matter is made out of.

What is the significance of doing Ardaas (supplication)?

A prayer that is recited by Gursikhs at least 3 times a day. There is a formal way of doing Ardaas, which is standing up with folded hands, and this is usually done after Nitnem (morning and evening after Rehraas). However, we are not just set to one way of doing Ardaas. As long as the mind is set in the right place and the prayer is said from the heart, it will be heard in Sach Khand (the realm of Truth). Our prayers are usually not heard (in most cases) because our concentration wavers and it is not said whole-heartedly or secondly we are still found wanting spiritually.

How can one do Sevaa (service) for the Panth (nation)?

Every Gursikh wishes to do sevaa for a Panthik cause. And rightfully so we should pray for such an opportunity.

What is Sevaa, and how do we do it?

How can one get rid of laziness and sleep little but not feel tired during the day?

It's prem for Sat-Guru's pavitar charan that reduces our 'haumai' - which is the primal reason for us not being able to get up at amritvela - this is because our ego tries to supersede our prem, and tells us more sleep = better health.

Anything that increases vismaad and prem i.e. kirtan, simran, listening to kathaa, reading sakhiyan, doing nishkaam seva etc will ultimately increase the will we need to wake up in at amritvela - but more importantly - it is Guru Prasad that will ultimately be turn our lives around.

What is Bairaag? When I am listening to Keertan I start to cry and I can't control myself. I don't know what to make of it.

Bairaag is something that comes naturally and is uncontrollable. Bairaag is the state when one cannot live without the guru even for one second. You should consider reading the life of the Gurus, Guru Angad Dev Jee, this is true Bairaag.

One is extremely fortunate to have such feelings.
